Dracaena draco - Trees

Dracaena draco
Dragon Trees are slow growing, evergreen trees with attractive hefty limbs and stiff but flexible leaves. Sparsely branched, the thick cylindrical trunk branches out after flowering into stout , upright arms of rosette sword shaped blue-green leaves up to 60cm in length.
When the tree is young the bark is smooth and grey, after some time the bark becomes a little more scaly with horizontal red stripes, which reminds us that this tree bleeds crimson red sap (likened to that of the blood of Dragons), when the bark is cut or bruised.
When mature the tree can grow to a height of between 5-6 meters tall and nearly as wide at the top. In frost free areas it can grow taller than this although not seen often in NZ. It is also used as a house plant where its growth can be limited to the pot it grows in.

MYTHICAL ORIGINS:

Dracaena means Dragon in Ancient Greek.

The name of this beautiful tree has mythical origins: for his 11th labour, Hercules had to bring back three golden apples from the garden of the Hespérides, which is guarded by Landon, the hundred-headed dragon. Hercules killed Landon and his blood flowed out over the land, which began to sprout ‘dragon’ trees. The tree exudes ‘dragon’s blood’ – a red sap – when cut. The trunks are long and slender and the leaves are sword shapped, blue green. The flowers are greenish-white, have a sweet smell and are followed by orange-brown berries which are a little smaller than a cherry, pointed and covered in a red, resinous substance, and taste sweet. Loves sun, drought tolerant.
