Hedychium coccineum (Hardy Ginger)
A large and robust Hedychium with spikes of orange - yellow flowers and banana like foliage. Flowers from late summer through to frost.
They love warm humid conditions so can be grown indoors if you have this type of environment. Do not put against windows where they can get sunburnt but in warm hallways and/or open sunny rooms are good. Heat pumps and fireplaces can dry them out so if you have these make sure you mist them 2-3 times weekly.

A tall species that is one of the best Hedychium species for the temperate climate.  Plant in a moist location that gets sun, but is still a bit protected.  Very exotic and tropical looking.  Plants can increase quite quickly to form large clumps.  The rhizome is very shallow, often the top is at the surface, so mulch with straw or leaves for frost protection.

  • Requires shade or bright filtered light with no direct sunlight.
  • Low wind tolerant.
  • Requires frost free site or indoors.
  • Grows to a height of 2 metres (approx).
  • Manages an indoor situation.
  • Requires adequate moisture.
  • Manages coastal conditions well. Salt spray will cause minimal marking.
  • Prefers a warm temperature.
